Living a Life of Optimal Health!

- from "The Optimal Health Revolution" by Duke Johnson, MD

The following passages have been taken from Dr. Duke Johnson's book "The Optimal Health Revolution."  I strongly recommend that anyone interested in living a long and healthy life pick up a copy of their own.  Inside you'll find a more in-depth discussion of the topics below.  Additionally, you will find the risk factors for chronic diseases like cancer, heart disease, diabetes and obesity, as well as a game plan for reducing them in your daily life.  I highly recommend this book.  - Kyoshi Baier

The problem with losing weight or living an optimally healthy life, is that no matter who you ask for advice automatically becomes an expert.  Fad diets are just that, fads.  What is good today is bad tomorrow, what was healthy yesterday will kill you today!  Our goal should be to live an optimally healthy lifestyle given our genetic heritage, personal history, and environment.

Genetic heritage is a major factor in our health, but it is not absolute fate.  The key words to know are genotype and phenotype.  Genotype is the genetic makeup you inherited from your parents.  Phenotype is the expression of your genes as influenced by many environmental factors and life experience.  Though your grandmother may have lived for a hundred years, you may not be so lucky as a result of living in a different world, with different lifestyle choices.  Conversely, a large percentage of your family may have succumbed to heart disease or cancer, but that does not necessarily mean you will.  There are things you can do to help offset the increased risk indicated by your family history and lifestyle.

The Eight Pillars of Optimal Health:

Pillar #1: Reduce Your Risk Factors for Chronic Disease

A risk factor is any lifestyle or biological quality or characteristic that can increase your likelihood of developing a disease.  You will often hear that the keys to good health are proper diet and exercise.  Diet and exercise are crucial to optimal health, but the are only two risk factors for chronic disease.  We need to know and address them all.

Pillar #2: Exercise

Science has shown that cardiovascular exercise reduces the risk of many diseases and adverse health conditions.  It has also been shown to reduce mortality rates for older people, and even slow the whole aging process.  But perhaps it's most important health benefit is that exercise reduces chronic inflammation.  Adding dietary supplementation with antioxidants to exercise provides even greater anti-inflammatory effects.

Pillar #3: Good Macronutrition

Good macronutrition describes the nutrients that make up most of our nutritional intake by weight - carbohydrates, fats and proteins.  Good macronutrition consists of eating the right types and percentages of these foods.  The Institute of Medicine recommends that the ranges of macronutrients in adults' daily diets should be:

45-65 percent carbohydrates

20-35 percent fats

10-35 percent proteins

A balanced diet must also include a good daily source of fiber.

These ranges differ widely from the recommendations in popular fad diets, because many of these diets have been based on poor or old science, or have been no more than educated guesses by the authors.

Pillar #4: Good Micronutrition

Micronutrition is the stuff that comes in tiny but critical amounts in our food.  This includes not only vitamins and minerals, but also phytonutrients (http://www.nutrilite.com/en-us/Nature/WhyNutrilite/phytonutrients.aspx?) - the active nutrients found in plants that are not defines as vitamins and minerals, for example lycopene.  As with vitamins and minerals we can phytonutrients from food supplements, though it is best to get as many as you can from food.  However, there is a vast body of evidence that clearly points to the need for supplementation for virtually everyone living in the developed world.

In short, most of us need supplements to win optimal health.  A lot of doctors will tell you otherwise, they are inadequately informed.  The next time a doctor tells you that you can get all the vitamins and minerals you need from food alone ask, "How many micrograms of folic acid did you eat yesterday?"  If the doctor makes up an answer just to be smart, ask about international units of vitamin A, C, D, E, and all the B's.  Don't worry about memorizing all the essential minerals and phytonutrients; your doctor will give up while your still on the alphabet stuff.

Pillar #5: Mind, Spirit and Positive Attitude

Happy and hopeful people live longer and healthier than the perennially depressed, angry, fearful, and pessimistic.  So try to exercise your mind and spirit the way you would your body.

Pillar #6: Adequate Rest

Most active adults need between 7-8 hours of sleep a night.  It has been shown that chronic sleep deprivation can lead top a shortened lifespan.  Sleep influences many aspects of our lives, including how well we think, sugar metabolism and immune function.  Chronic sleep deprivation has even been shown to be associated with chronic increased inflammation and obesity.

Pillar #7: Good Medical Care

There are several risk factors for heart disease and cancer that can only be assessed by a physician through the use of blood tests - not to mention the value of early detection for those diseases.

Pillar #8: Healthy Environment and Good Hygiene

Reduce the levels of chemicals and pollution, as best you can where you can, in your daily life.

Dietary  Supplements Role in Optimal Health

Thirteen Rules for Supplementation:

1.  More is not better.  There is an optimal amount that you should take of any supplement, and that amount may vary from person to person.   http://www.nutrilite.com/en-us/Science/Personal Health/personalization.aspx?

2.  "Natural" does not mean "safe."  Marketers sometimes label their products "natural," as if that guarantees wholesomeness and safety.  Poison mushrooms and heroin are natural, and both will kill you.

3.  Buying something from the health food store does not guarantee it's healthy.  There are potentially dangerous plants and herbs readily available in stores around the world, and in some countries their manufacture and sale aren't regulated at all.

4.  Avoid supplements that contain multiple herbs.  To just throw many herbs together without logical connection is purely a marketing ploy to make the product seem valuable.  You'd be using similar logic if you were to grab allot of products off the pharmacy shelf and randomly take them.

5.  Check how a supplement is made.  The best supplements are manufactured and packaged under solid guidelines that assure cleanliness and purity.  http://www.nutrilite.com/en-us/Nature/WhyNutrilite/seed-to-serving.aspx

6.  Choose "food" over synthetic chemicals.  The best supplements are those made from pressed or condensed food items, rather than chemicals that are synthesized in a laboratory.  http://www.nutrilite.com/en-us/Nature/WhyNutrilite/seed-to-serving.aspx

7.  Opt for organic.  Of those supplements that are from condensed or pressed food sources, organically grown ones are safer.  http://www.nutrilite.com/en-us/Science/NHI/BestOfNature/farming-organic.aspx

8.  Do some research.  Buy your supplements only from companies that can document that the amounts of nutrients in the tablets are equal to what's promised on the label.  http://www.nutrilite.com/en-us/Science/Research/quality-assurance.aspx

9.  Money isn't everything.  Nutritional value is the objective, so don't base your purchase on price alone.

10.  Be cautious of Ayurvedic products.  A Harvard Medical School study reported that one in five Ayurvedic contained potentially harmful levels of lead, mercury, and/or arsenic, and there have been many documented cases of heavy metal toxicity due to these products.

11.  Listen to the right people.  When someone tells you that they are the only people in the world being honest with you, beware, especially if they want your money.

12.  Beware of drug interactions.  If you are currently taking any prescription medication, check with your pharmacist to make sure that the supplement you are interested in will not interact badly with your medication.

13.  Get smart.  Make informed choices.  You need to know what you are taking and why you are taking it.  http://www.nutrilite.com/en-us/Nature/WhyNutrilite/seed-to-serving.aspx
